BATTLE OF BRITAIN  /  BBC1 - Sunday 19 September 2010, 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

battle of britain

To mark the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain, arguably the most important event in modern British history, brothers Colin and Ewan McGregor present a BBC1 feature length documentary leading us through the timeline of events during the height of the Battle of Britain.

For Colin as a twenty year served RAF veteran the most famous aerial war in history has had a significant role in his life. As he learns to transfer his fighter jet skills to flying the iconic Spitfire his equally plane crazy brother Ewan finds a passion for the 1940's workhorse of the RAF - the Hurricane. Together they take us on a journey to honour the heroes of 1940 revealing their inspiring personal stories and discover how 'the few' of the RAF saved Britain from imminent invasion by the Nazis.

FIRST LIGHT  /  BBC2 - Tuesday 14th September 2010, 9 pm - 10:20 pm

first light

At the age of nineteen Geoffrey Wellum was one of the youngest Spitfire pilots to fly in the Battle of Britain. Eight years ago his extraordinary and brutally honest memoir 'First Light' became the most unlikely of bestsellers. This BBC2 drama - documentary narrated by Geoffrey Wellum and featuring Sam Heughan as his younger self - tells the story of Geoffrey's time stationed with 92 Squadron at Biggin Hill during the height of the Battle of Britain. It delivers an intensely evocative drama both on the ground and in the air. Like the book the stark revelations in

the film are a far cry from the clichéd image of the fighter pilot with a stiff upper lip, gunning with steely- eyed calm. 'Boy' Wellum reveals the fear and often heart-stopping terror he faces day after day. As his youthful joy of flying the Spitfire turns to deathly combat and a struggle for survival he agonisingly longs to be free; to be a child again in the summer of his all-too brief youth.
